Point: The Spirit of God and the word of God are sufficient for the people of God to accomplish the mission of God.

 

Scripture: Luke 4:1-13

Principles for studying a passage of Scripture:

 Comprehension: What does the passage say? What are the details?

 Interpretation: What does the passage mean? Why did the events happen the way they happened?

 Application: How should this passage change me?

 

Questions:

1. Read Luke 4:1-13 together as a group.

 Interpretation: In 2-3 sentences, summarize the main ideas of this passage in your own words. What is God saying in this text and why?

 Comprehension: What are the three ways the devil tempted Jesus? Explain your answer.

 Comprehension: Read 1 John 2:16 and Genesis 3:6. Temptation all boils down to three specific things: What are those? Explain your answer.

 Interpretation: Read 1 Corinthians 10:13 and Hebrews 4:14-16. Do you believe that Jesus was tempted in every way in which we are tempted? Explain why or why not.

 Comprehension: Read Luke 4:1-13 again. How did Jesus combat the temptation from the devil? Give examples from the text.

 Application: How can you begin to identify temptation? What is the best way to combat temptation when it comes your way? Explain.

 Application: What is one thing you will do this week to ground yourself in the Word of God? Make a plan and share it with the group.

2. Sermon Application (for breakouts):

 Conviction: How has this Scripture (or this Sermon) challenged you personally? Be specific.

 Character: What about you needs to change in light of what you’ve learned? Be honest and specific.

 Competence: What is your plan for change? Share with the group what you are going to do, how you are going to do it, and when you are going to do it. Leaders – Write everyone’s plan down in a journal and come back to it next week during breakouts.
