Point: Jesus sees us, shows compassion, and crosses the line.

Scripture: Luke 7:11-17

Principles for studying a passage of Scripture:

 Comprehension: Asks – What does the passage say?

 Interpretation: Asks – What does the passage mean?

 Application: Asks – How should this passage change me?

Questions:

 Comprehension: Read Luke 7:11-17. What do we know about the woman in this story? What was her circumstance? How would the death of her son have affected her economically and in this culture? Explain.

 Comprehension: Jesus responded to this woman in three ways in verses 13 and 14. What were those responses and why are they important to consider? Explain your answer.

 Comprehension: Jesus’ compassion on the widow led to a significant miracle in raising the dead boy to life. How did the two crowds respond?

 Interpretation: When it says that Jesus saw the woman and had compassion on her, what do you think that means? What does Jesus’ compassion look like?

 Interpretation: Why do you think Jesus told the woman not to weep over her dead son? Even Jesus wept over his friend Lazarus knowing he would bring Lazarus back from the dead (John 11:1-44). Explain your answer.

 Interpretation: What can we learn from this story about how we should respond to Jesus Himself rising from the grave? Explain your answer.

 Application: What does this story teach us about Jesus’ compassion and empathy for people? How should this change the way you see people? Explain.

 Application: What is the difference between compassion and empathy? How does real compassion lead to true empathy?

 Application: How will you go about pursuing Christ-like compassion that leads to Christ-like empathy for others this week? What in your life needs to change? How will you go about changing? Be honest and give us a plan.
