Point: If you read the Word to understand the Word, you would be led by the Word instead of trying to lead the Word.

Scripture: Luke 6:1-5; Cross Reference – Mark 2:23-28, 1 Samuel 21:1-6

Principles for studying a passage of Scripture:

Comprehension: Asks – What does the passage say?
Interpretation: Asks – What does the passage mean?
Application: Asks – How should this passage change me?

Questions:

1. Read Luke 6:1-5 together as a group.

Comprehension: In your own words, how would you summarize what is happening in this story?

Comprehension: Read Exodus 20:8-10. Do you see the Sabbath law being broken here in Luke 6? Explain.

Comprehension: What exactly were the Pharisees upset about? Explain.

Interpretation: When it came to reading God’s Law (His Word), how did the Pharisees miss God’s heart? Why were they reading it wrong? Explain your answer.

Interpretation: Read 1 Samuel 21:1-6. Why do you think Jesus used this story to make His point? What was the point Jesus was trying to make? Explain.

Interpretation: What do you think Jesus meant when He said, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath”?

Application: How do you read God’s Word? Do you try to apply it first? Understand the context first? Interpret the meaning first?

Application: What do you think the point of reading God’s Word is? Do you always read through that filter? Explain.

Application: After studying this passage, do you need to change the way you approach God’s Word? How should you read it differently?

Application: What is being revealed about God’s character in this passage? Explain your answer.

Application: How does your character need to change in order to better image God? Be honest and specific.
