God Through Us: You Serve Who You Worship

The first person outside of my grandmother I ever trusted to tell me about Jesus was a bus driver named Nobody. I call him that because everytime he showed up I would have to ask him his name again and again…

Finally he gave me a card with his information on it, which was cool but what was really cool was what he had written on the back of the card. It said:

“If you forget my name, you’ve lost nothing. But if you forget the name of Jesus Christ, you’ve lost everything.”

That is something I never forgot, mainly because he lived a life that truly showed how important that statement was.

I met him while I was in jail. Every Tuesday night, he showed up in his bus driving uniform, straight from work. Nobody paid him. Nobody made him come. He willingly walked into that place to serve Jesus by serving us.

He didn’t come to be known. He came to make Jesus known. And God used his willing service to change and challenge my life.

When I got out and moved to Tucson, I contacted the jail chaplain and started going back in to preach the gospel. Willingly, this time. They didn’t even have to give me a ride!

Now, I ain’t gonna lie. When those doors closed behind me, it freaked me out a little. “You’re gonna open those when I’m done, right? Just to be clear … I do not live here!”

But I wanted to do what that bus driver had done for me: make Jesus known to people who didn’t know they could know Him.

Here’s what I came to know:
You willingly serve who or what you worship.

We see this in Nehemiah 11. The temple had been rebuilt. The walls were up. But Jerusalem still needed people to live inside the city. The leaders went first, and then one out of every ten people was selected to move into the city by a “lottery system”.

But check this out. Verse 2 tells us there were also another group of people who willingly offered to go.

They basically said, “Right here. Me and my family. We’ll go.”

That was a big deal. They were leaving familiar comforts, relationships, and livelihoods. They were stepping into hard work and uncertainty. Yet they gladly offered themselves.

Something had happened in their hearts. Their love for God on the inside was directing their lives on the outside.

That’s what love does. That’s what worship does.

When you love Jesus with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, that love shows up in how you live and how you worship. Faithfulness and joyful service flow out of a life of worship. Romans 12:1 calls us to “present our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God which is our spiritual worship..” A living sacrifice… Think about that. I’ve heard plenty of people say they would die for their family. My question is, “Will you live for them?” You can not truly choose to die for someone that you have not lived for.

We need to ask ourselves that same question about Jesus. “Will I willingly choose to live for Jesus?”

Will I willingly give Him my time? My resources? My plans? Will I let go of familiar comforts and take on what He puts in front of me?

Jesus said to let our light shine so people would see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16). That bus driver did exactly that. He showed up, loved Jesus, and willingly served. God worked through him.

That is God through us.

So, do you love Jesus? How will you willingly serve Him?

Start with what He has put in front of you. Show up. Make Him known. Let your love for Him lead your life.
